I was skimming through the New England Primer this weekend and was thinking how far we have fallen from what the founders thought education should be in America. This book I have linked to is a reprint of the 1777 version. It was the first schoolbook printed in the United States and was used in the education of the founders’ children. It begins with a sample morning and evening prayer for children and among the lessons there are questions like “Who is Jesus Christ?” with answer “The son of God” and “Who was the chief Apostle of the Gentiles?” with answer “Paul”.
Today the Bible and its lessons have been removed from schools, which certainly was never the intention of those who formed this nation. But we are moving even further yet. The current situation in New York is one of many examples. A lower court is evicting churches who hold their worship services in local schools. The higher court is refusing to hear the case so these churches are hoping that the legislature will pass S.B. 6087, a bill that shouldn’t have to even be introduced, but that is the world we live in. They are also hoping that a Governor who has yet to take a stand will concede and sign it into law. Christianity seems to be under increasing attack so I do believe it is important for Christians to take a stand in such matters. We can also pray that God will take situations such as this…that are meant for evil…and use them for his good.

I am reading David Barton’s book, Original Intent right now. I was struck by the same thought, “How far we have fallen!” We all, as Christians, need to seek God’s face, pray, and turn from our wicked ways so that God will heal our land. I do fear that we have let it go on too long and will have to endure the punishment that God will visit on us. However, I also have the hope and assurance that we have already won the war. Jesus has overcome the world.
Very well said Fran. David Barton’s Original Intent is one I have on my recommended reading list. For me its a must have resource that I end up going to time and time again.
