The Heritage Foundation on Wisconsin

March 11, 2011

I thought I would let those smarter than me give some takes on the Wisconsin union showdown.  The Wisconsin legislature scaled down the budget legislation yesterday and passed it.  It does my heart good to see some politicians not act like politicians and show some courage.  Here is the Heritage Foundation’s description of what happened and what the protestors have been up to.  I guess this is a real protest unlike the Tea Party movement.

If I was an investigative reporter I would keep a close eye on this union which spent more money in last year’s election cycle than any other special interest group in Wisconsin ($1.5 million vs about $800,000 for its nearest competitor).  I say that because now teachers are not forced to join the union to be a teacher in Wisconsin.  The union also cannot use the State’s payroll system to automatically deduct dues.  So if I was a reporter, common sense would tell me to keep a weather eye out…with an emphasis on the intimidation tactics used in the private sector.  Could keep them busy.

Here are a few videos that will give you a good perspective on what is actually going on…again from the Heritage Foundation.

101 lesson on public sector unions  (or the written report …has the video embedded in it)

Short Myth vs Facts video

And Hitler himself on his budget legislation

Unfortunately (as seen by some of the comments) there will be those who simply refuse to acknowledge reality.  Personally I would have asked some tougher questions to the protestors on the Myth vs Facts video.  Like the hypothetical…would you think it is right if someone forced you to join an organization and pay dues in order to have a certain job (and as a kicker) used your money to support politicians that you do not support?

For those that are completely bored with the Wisconsin situation here is something else for you to read from the Heritage Foundation.  These 11 reports  were written as constitutional guidance for lawmakers, but they are good for us as well.  Read them this weekend and I promise you will feel smarter on Monday.

If you are still bored I have added numerous topics to The Bible in Real Life page this week so check them out and let me know what you think.  Have a blessed weekend.
