In the Defense of Marriage

August 16, 2010

I have been sitting by watching all the attacks on traditional marriage here lately in that helpless way that we have become accustomed to.  We had a judge in Massachusetts strike down provisions in the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). We also had Judge Walker in California strike down the recent change to the California Constitution protecting marriage (proposition 8).

Boiling it down to the basics, it all really goes back to the progressive principle that the government is not beholden to any higher authority.  To a progressive, values (laws…rights..etc) are not derived from the Bible as the founders believed, but they are instead relative to ‘the worldview of the times’.   In this case the worldview is one of sexual immorality and unfortunately the President has joined those who promote it.  He has been very vocal about this point.  While running for the Senate in 2004 he wrote a letter stating, “For the record, I opposed DOMA [ the Defense of Marriage Act ] in 1996. It should be repealed and I will vote for its repeal on the Senate floor.” The administration also makes the point on the White House website, “He supports full civil unions and federal rights for LGBT couples and opposes a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.  He supports repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” But aside from this and his church’s approval of gay marriage, the ultimate evidence for me was when he said “I don’t think homosexuals are immoral any more than I think heterosexuals are immoral.” This was in response to General Pace’s comment that homosexuality was indeed immoral.

It would be great if the state stayed completely out of something like this, but they have not…the reasons they have not are too numerous to list here as are the reasons to defend traditional marriage.  There are indeed many avenues to approach this topic, but I like to keep things simple.  So as I told a facebook friend during a recent (and lively) 3 day debate…nothing trumps the Bible.  Perspective is key.  One day I will have to stand before God and account for all my actions and I do not think the equal rights argument is going to sway him.  Liberals and Libertarians can argue with me or ridicule me for my stance (as they have in the past), but that is ok.   I will take that over the alternative.
