Ideas for a better Union – Idea 10

August 12, 2010

There is a lot of petty stuff going on now.  I mentioned Harry Reid’s comment yesterday, but that is certainly not the only example of poor character.  We had a candidate for a New Hampshire state seat say that he wished Sarah and Levi would have been on that plane that went down in Alaska.  We also had democrats holding a big fundraiser for Charles Rangel.  It is bad enough that they continue to support an extremely corrupt politician, but former New York City Mayor David Dinkins evidently upped the ante when he made an obscene gesture to protesters holding signs saying Rangel should resign.  But it is not all bad.  I saw that former President Bush made a surprise visit to DFW airport to greet incoming troops.  I know many of us miss that kind of character in the head office.

But there are more important things that politicians should be worried about.  I said yesterday that I believed that the government should find places it can remove itself from so today I thought I would bring one of those things to light.

What about the Department of Energy?

The Department of Energy was created in 1977.  Like many other government intrusions, it was done (by Jimmy Carter) under the guise of a crisis.  At its founding the stated mission of the department was to end the “United States dependence on foreign oil”.  You can hardly say that they have been successful.  Like every other government entity, it has grown and grown and not accomplished its stated goal.  Today it is more of a political tool for the government to push this green technology or that green technology instead of letting the free market find its way.  Its budget for 2010 is $26.4 billion and the department was given another $38 billion of your tax dollars in the stimulus bill.  The elimination of this department will save the government money and eliminate some special interest issues as well.
