Pelosi and The Word

August 5, 2010

In May of this year House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said “she believes she must pursue public policies in keeping with the values of Jesus Christ, The Word made Flesh.”

It is so puzzling as her general attitude towards people does not come off as very Christian like.  I remember her asking some protesters last year who were yelling drill here, drill now “Can we drill your brains?” That was about as Christian like as Hoyer’s response to the same crowd.  But all sophomoric antics aside, for Pelosi to say that her decisions are driven by The Word is much more serious.

Two of the most obvious issues that are addressed by the Bible are abortion and homosexual relationships.  I think everyone knows how Pelosi stands on these two issues.

She is rated 0% by the NRLC, indicating a pro legalized abortion stance.  Her record certainly supports such a rating.  She has twice voted against making it a crime for someone to transport a minor across state lines to get an abortion without parental notification (1999, 2005).  She has twice voted against banning partial birth abortion (2000, 2003).  She voted no on making it a federal crime to harm a fetus while committing other crimes (2001, 2004).  To put a nail in the coffin she also voted no on banning abortion funding to other nations, which is obviously a stand she has taken before with her support of UN ‘family planning’.  If you want more details on her votes you can check them out here.

Her actions on gay marriage are similar.  She voted no on Constitutionally defining marriage as one man and one woman. She voted no on an amendment banning same sex marriage.  She also voted against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996.  I have a problem believing she follows The Word when she marches in gay rights parades and votes the way she does.  I believe she is more in line with her boss, Barack Obama, who said  ”I don’t think homosexuals are immoral any more than I think heterosexuals are immoral.”

There are certainly other examples that show she does not follow The Word with her policies.  Some probably will try to argue that the Bible does not take those stances against these issues, but as I have written before, it is very clear in stance against both abortion and homosexuality.   If Pelosi wants to promote anti-Christian polices, that is her choice, but it is wrong of her to imply that her stances are biblical.  It could in fact put her in an uncomfortable position.  For instance, somebody might ask her when Jesus had a right to life…wait a minute, someone has.
