“Now, some of you may have noticed that we have been building this foundation without much help from our friends in the other party. From our efforts to rescue the economy, to health insurance reform, to financial reform, most have sat on the sidelines and shouted from the bleachers. They said no to tax cuts for small businesses; no to tax credits for college tuition; no to investments in clean energy. They said no to protecting patients from insurance companies and consumers from big banks.”
You will have to excuse me. I know there are probably other things I could write about today, but I am really stuck on Obama’s speech at Carnegie Mellon earlier this month. In this excerpt from the speech, Obama is promoting his “foundation” of big government policies. But he is also telling the American people a lie. The lie that conservatives in Congress are not presenting any ideas, and are only bashing him because they want him to fail. I see this argument all over the web…sometimes I cannot tell if it is out of dishonesty or just plain ignorance. The President can choose to not agree with the opposition’s legislation, but he should not pretend that alternative ideas do not exist and he certainly should not perpetuate this lie to the American people.
Here are a few examples to give to your liberal friends if they try to push this little fib. Obama mentioned energy so here are 4 pieces of legislation introduced by Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.
Here is an alternative budget introduced by House Republicans.
There was the Economic Freedom Act of 2010 that was just recently introduced.
Obama also mentioned healthcare, which is where this lie of bashing with no alternative ideas gets pretty humorous. I wrote about the Patients Choice Act when it was introduced, but the truth of the matter is that were over 30 pieces of legislation introduced by Republicans during that timeframe. Even more now (according to one speaker at the Republican State Convention, the number is currently near 90). I found this article by the Washington Examiner that listed them all, but that was back in September of 09. I think 30 examples will suffice though.
Obama is right, there is shouting from the bleachers, but there are also ideas, and much better ones than what they are pushing down the throats of the American people. These shouts are from people who still have faith in our people, and in the ability of the States to do what’s best for them without big brother stepping in. They are from people who still value the Constitution for what it says, not for what they want it to say. Hopefully if you present people with the fact that there are alternatives such as the ones above, it will open their eyes. Another thing that will open their eyes is just simple old fashioned education. I have updated the book store with some more of my favorites. I have tried to get a couple of liberals I know to read some of them, but they refused. I find that you can then question their open-mindedness…they really do not like that.
