I find it pretty hypocritical of the media for not giving the dismissal of this voter intimidation case any scrutiny whatsoever. I have found very few outlets that have given it any coverage at all. This is the case that civil rights activist Bartle Bull (former Robert F. Kennedy organizer) called “the most blatant form of voter discrimination I have encountered in my life.” I mentioned this incident and Bartle Bull’s description of it in a June post last year.
I then discussed that it was the number 3 DOJ official, Thomas J. Perrelli, who made the decision to drop the case. I also included a very good article from Frances Rice in that post that you should read if you have not done so already.
I briefly mentioned this particular case again last week when I talked about Assistant Attorney General Perez’s comments on the case.
The situation has certainly not gotten any better for the administration. Christopher Coates, the Civil Rights Division Voting Section Chief, who led the case against these members of the Black Panthers, has been removed from his leadership role and transferred to South Carolina. Keep in mind this is a very distinguished lawyer who has worked on voting rights cases for decades. Another career trial lawyer who worked on the case has now submitted his resignation because he is disgusted with the current situation. This lawyer, Christian Adams, has been subpoenaed to testify before the Commission on Civil Rights, but the DOJ has refused to allow him. Very shady. Even more so since Perez avoided questions on why he was not allowed to testify. He also avoided questions on Perrelli’s multiple visits to the White House right before the decision to drop the case was made. All this adds up to an investigative reporter’s dream, but there seem to be few takers. You really would just need the skills that I have demonstrated here today. Mainly just the ability to read.
