Lincoln Reagan Dinner

February 22, 2010

The Brazoria County Lincoln Reagan Dinner was once again a good experience this year.  There were many representatives and candidates attending.  I was surprised to see my Congressman, Pete Olson, there since most of Brazoria County is in district 14.  I was able to speak to him for several minutes and came away pretty impressed.  Unfortunately for those in district 14, Ron Paul chose not to make an appearance.  Maybe he did not want to face the people he badmouths on a regular basis…who knows.  I see that he won a straw vote at CPAC, which was written about in The Facts.  I did not read the article, but I wonder if they mentioned that the guy that made the announcement was nearly booed off the stage.  The Ron Paul organization is very good at manipulating things such as Caucuses and straw votes so that came as no surprise to me.  I am not sure if Bruce Bolock was at the dinner, but I doubt he is the kind of person who would willingly want to talk face to face with someone such as myself.  Considering how he has treated people in the past, I am not sure I would want to speak to him either though.  All three candidates running against Ron Paul did attend the event and I had the opportunity to speak with both Gerald Wall and Tim Graney.

The speaker at the event was Robin Armstrong from the Republican Party of Texas.  He made several good points in his speech including the need for outreach in the community.  He mentioned everything from talking to your neighbors to volunteering for the party at the local level.  And that is really what it will take to get our country back.  If you are upset with the way our country is headed, then there are ample opportunities to get involved.  Even with something as simple as the education of your children.

Overall I thought the event went very well (including the BBQ which was awesome) and I would encourage others to attend in the future.  It is open to anyone and was only $25 this year.  It is a great opportunity to talk with your local representatives.  Thanks to all the volunteers who put together a great event and also a thanks to all those at the dinner who offered their words of encouragement to me and my efforts with my little blog here.  If you are looking for ways to get involved go to the Brazoria County GOP website.  You can contact them and they will gladly inform you how you can help.

The CPAC Straw Poll indicating Paul ahead for the 2010 presidential race is quite misleading. 10,000 were in attendance, including many young people. Only 2,000 actually cast ballots……in booths set up at the convention. This was not a show of hands of the entire conference, thus the results are not necessarily reflective of the entire committee. These important details seem to be omitted in the news. Manipulation of the facts seems to be a constant in the paul camp.

This is a little off topic, but why are so many conservatives enamored with Lincoln? His legacy is that you are beholden to the federal government’s whims and we will kill as many of you as necessary to make it so.

Steve-
I will say that is the oddest spin on Lincoln that I have ever heard. Is that in some Ron Paul or Libertarian handbook or something…just kidding…although I think I have heard Ron Paul say something to that effect. I believe that Lincoln is revered because of his character and conservative beliefs. He held the union together and faced the aboration of slavery. In that he faced something that the founding fathers did not despite their declaration that all men are created equal. If there are any history guru’s out there they can discuss the war. I am actually sick as a dog today and can barely speak.

@ steve
lincoln saved the union by doing some things that are not popular with constitutionalists. the jailing of northern newspaper editors was necessary in order to preserve the union. i agree that lincoln did things against the constitution, but washington does it every day today. and over much less necessary issues. what lincoln did was violate the constitution in order to save it. i know it sounds strange, it’s strange for me to write it, but lincoln truly had the union in mind when he overstepped his constitutional authority. i must say he was brilliant, because it worked. he preserved the sovereignty of our country which at the time was more important than following the document that is not black and white in every area. i am a constitutionalist, but i would agree that there are flaws in the document, that is why the founders wrote in the amendment process. just my thoughts, and by the way, i grew up in the land of lincoln.
