With all the problems this White House should be focused on, I simply cannot believe that they think the solution to their failing message is to try to quiet dissent. The overt attacks on not so kind media outlets is something you expect if you are say…in Chicago, but not from a President. Obama has three quarters of the media pushing his agenda yet he still sees the need to go after Fox News. This un-presidential pattern started when it was revealed that the Obama administration ordered the attacks on Rush Limbaugh. That obviously backfired, but it did not stop there. Obama then let the following comment slip; I imagine out of frustration.
“I’ve got one television station that is entirely devoted to attacking my administration…You’d be hard pressed if you watched the entire day to find a positive story about me on that front.”
Evidently he believes it is every station’s duty to promote his agenda and not to question anything. It is kinda funny actually. Pew research shows that both CNN and Fox News both ran about the same number of negative stories on Obama during the campaign as compared to positive (Fox 40%, CNN 39%). The only difference is that CNN’s stories on McCain were negative 61% of the time. Fox News’ negative McCain coverage was the same as for Obama at 40%. So who’s being fair. Ah, but I digress with those pesky facts.
The next punishment for Fox News from the administration was their airing of Obama’s health care media blitz on every channel (to include Univision) except Fox News. Sometime after this (last month), David Axelrod met with Fox Chairman Roger Ailes. Evidently that did not go well because the White House has been using their blog over the last few weeks to blast Fox even more. I think the tipping point was over the weekend though when White House Communication Director Anita Dunn called Fox News a “wing of the Republican Party”. (As a side note, she is married to Obama lawyer Robert Bauer. During the campaign he attacked the McCain accusing him of voter suppression because he spoke out against ACORN’s voter fraud. He also attempted to keep TV stations from airing NRA ads that revealed Obama’s gun record. Quiet the dissent. I see a pattern.)
Even the perception that an administration is trying to influence a media outlet is bad, but the fact that they are publicly doing it is simply unacceptable from someone such as the President. To put it bluntly, the President and his administration need to grow up and stop these childish games.
