There is nothing more ironic in this world than a person who proclaims to protect our freedoms and in the same breath promotes socialism. Except maybe for a person who defends socialism with Christianity and then supports abortion and gay marriage. I guess the latter is more hypocrisy, but both describe a liberal mindset.
Those liberals who try to defend their re-distribution of wealth often use the Bible out of context to make it fit with their point of view. The one I have seen the most lately is the story of the wealthy young man in Mathew 19. In this story a young rich man asks Jesus what he has to do to have eternal life. Jesus responds by saying “”If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” The young man of course walks away sad. This story is not about re-distribution of wealth. It is about putting God first in your life…ie the first commandment. So like I said, liberals tend to take the bible out of context to fit their needs. Jesus had other priorities than money as most Christians should.
With that being said, you just have go a few chapters forward to Matthew 25 to find a parable teaching us to be stewards of what God has given us. This of course is the Parable of the talents. Other biblical principles show us that we should work hard in everything we do for the glory of God. Another teaches us to stay out of debt. (imagine that) The bible does not tell us that we should give money to a state to re-distribute to others. The early church as well as churches today did not make it mandatory for their members to give money to the poor. Instead they followed what Paul said in Corinthians when he said “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Even this was to support fellow believers. How someone can take this and manipulate it to support state re-distribution of wealth is beyond me. We should give to the church as God commanded and to those organizations that will spread the gospel to all parts of the world.
I am sure many liberals’ intentions are good, but I also do not see these people giving all their own money to the poor. They instead promote a big government that would re-distribute wealth of others. They avoid the truth. A socialist system is supposed to make everyone equal, but history has shown us otherwise. A capitalist system truly gives everyone an equal opportunity for success, rewards hard work, and ensures economic freedom independent from a government. This in turn gives us freedom of choice. A choice to be good stewards with what we have been blessed with or not. I do not think God would have it any other way.
