Defending the Faith

During the recent campaign, Obama was quoted as saying that small town people cling to our guns and religion when times get tough.  Well, I would hope that we cling to these things even when times are good.  Unfortunately though, I do not think that a lot of people do.  There are even many who will do everything they can to remove God from our public places in the name of tolerance and open-mindedness.

Despite the historical facts that clearly show our country’s Christian heritage, those who defend these things are labeled as the radical Christian right.  Maybe being a Christian these days is radical, but we sure have been in this country longer than progressive organizations such as the ACLU.

I imagine that if we all took a hard honest look at today’s world, most of our problems are self created.  Self created because we have been doing exactly what the ACLU wants us to do.  Remove God from our lives.

It did not used to be this way.  Just about ever aspect of our great country is based upon the Christian values of our founding fathers as well as those of the men and women before them.  So as Christians we should be prepared to not only defend our faith itself, but also defend against those who say we are not a Christian nation.

Here are a couple examples.

In September of 1777, our congress voted to appropriate money to purchase and import 20,000 English bibles to be distributed in the United States.  Could you imagine something like that today.  These days we appropriate money for just about anything but something like this.  Emergency contraception anyone.  Perhaps abortion.

A few years later in 1782, Congress created a committee to review a Bible edition produced by a Mr. Aiken to ensure its accuracy and quality.  In turn, they recommended this English edition of the bible to the people of the United States.

There are countless other historical references to the Christian beginnings of our country.  These two I happened to find in The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States. It is one of the Books I have recommended on the right hand side of the page.  It is called the ACLU’s worst nightmare by some.  Originally published in 1800′s, it has been out of circulation for over 100 years until recently.

Of course you probably will not convince a progressive of our Christian heritage with historical facts, but it is fun to watch them squirm.  They will not find our true heritage for the same reason that a thief does not find the police.
