Buy more guns now

December 8, 2008

At least that is what a lot of people are doing these days.  Background checks for people buying guns were up 49% the week Obama was elected and gun dealers are reporting increase in sales as high as 38% in his home state.

In response to these numbers, Obama came out with the following statement.

“I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment. Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven’t indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word.”

That’s pretty funny.  He is asking us to take a politician at his word.  It is sad, but that just cannot be done these days.

The main problem with taking him for his word is that Obama’s legislative record does not agree with his current statements during the election.  He supports the hand gun ban in Chicago as he supported the one in Washington D.C. that was ruled unconstitutional.  Two cities with incredibly high crime rates I might add.

He also tried to increase taxes on firearms by 500 percent while in the Illinois state legislature, essentially making firearms unattainable by legal gun owners.  I do not believe the black market (where most criminals get their weapons) would be affected by this tax.

I think it is completely understandable that people would rush to buy guns before the election.  Obama must understand that the liberal gun control segment of society that he has aligned himself with do not want common sense gun laws; they want to take our guns away or at least make it more difficult to get them.  The latter is why a lot of people are out there buying guns now.  They will indeed push for excessive tax increases on firearms and ammunition as Obama tried to do in Illinois.  From there it becomes a slippery slope.
