It is amazing how Democrats can change their mind on the qualifications of a candidate to be President within such a short period. A few months ago many Democrats agreed that Obama did not have the experience or leadership to be our next President. Now he is the best thing since the spork.
Clinton’s entire campaign was based upon his lack of experience. Lack of experience of running large organizations and staffs as well as lack of experience with national and foreign issues. Makes sense. He has only been a Senator for four years. Clinton was not the only one who felt Obama was not quite qualified to be the commander-in-chief.
Democratic Senator Joe Biden also was very critical of Obama. With regards to his Iraq rhetoric, Biden said the following, “”I don’t recall hearing a word from Barack about a plan or a tactic.” There was good reason he did not. There wasn’t a single member of the Democratic Party that had any other plan but to surrender as soon as possible and criticize Bush while doing so. Even Biden himself.
But Senator Biden’s most damaging remarks relate to Obama’s leadership and for once a liberal had facts to back up what they were saying. Biden accused Obama of having poor leadership in his role as a subcommittee chairman on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In the last couple of years this committee held 3 hearings on the war in Afghanistan; the war that Obama supports and says we should be concentrating on.
In 2006 for the hearing on ‘The Coalition To ISAF Command In Afghanistan’, Obama was not present.
In 2007 for the hearing on ‘A New Strategy In Afghanistan’, Obama was present and asked one question. This question was not about the Taliban. In fact, it wasn’t even about Afghanistan.
The latest hearing in 2008 was for ‘A New Strategy In Afghanistan’. Obama was not present.
I know you are thinking so what. But because of his lack of experience in leadership roles, we all have to look at these instances just as Biden did. If he handles this small responsibility in this way, how will he handle the responsibility of the presidency? It is something we must look at closely during this election year. Being a leader requires action, not just empty words.
I will end with this. These are not accusations from the radical right. These come from Democrats who now support this man for President. What has changed in these few months that now make Obama qualified to be our next president? Absolutely nothing.
