A federal judge in Canada ruled yesterday that a US soldier who deserted his unit prior to deployment to Iraq must be deported back to the United States. Robin Long is among 200 other deserters who have filed for refugee status in Canada to protest the Iraq War. Like many others they claim the Iraq War is illegal just because they lack the understanding of why we went in the first place. These so called soldiers are despicable in my mind. Not only did they desert the Army, but they also deserted their brothers and sisters in arms in their time of need. Simply put, they are cowards.
They were not drafted into an Army against their free will. They volunteered like every other soldier. And like every other soldier they understand the risk and responsibility such a decision holds. They were probably hoping for a free ride off of Uncle Sam, but were unpleasantly surprised when they were actually asked to do something for their country.
I hope that the rest of these deserters are deported back to the United States and face the punishment they deserve. Unfortunately, they will probably get a slap on the hand and sent on their merry way…….to become congressmen.
