First, I would like to apologize for my inability to find time to add my usual daily posts to the site. I was pretty busy with work during the day, and our hosts usually had activities planned for the evenings. So in short, hanging out in Amsterdam took precedence over writing; and who can blame me, Amsterdam is a pretty cool place to hang out.
.
Since I left there have been some pretty big political milestones. Despite their best efforts, the democrats have chosen a candidate for President; Mr. Barack Hussein Obama. Everyone that owns a television set knows that Obama is running on a campaign of Change, but what Change is he referring to? He will say he is not a product of the Democratic Party establishment, but he IS a product of a Chicago area political machine that has just as many if not more shady characters, even some criminal elements depending on who you ask. Maybe it is a new way of thinking or new ideas. I don’t really think so. He is entrenched in the Democratic Party Platform and strays from it less than any other senator. Obama voted with the Democratic Party 96.0% of 251 votes in 2007 and was ranked the most liberal senator of 2007 by the National Journal. On the website ontheissues.org and their vote-match system Obama is categorized as a hardcore liberal. When it is all said and done, he is just another lawyer and politician. Intelligent and crafty. He will tell you that he believes one thing if you believe it, but that doesn’t mean he will vote that way.
.
Since, in reality, he is no different than any other politician, how do we analyze him? We do it through his positions on issues. He does have them; sometimes you have to get past the smooth tongue and the hope inspiring messages, but they are there.Â
.
Take his stance on gun control. These are the things you should know about Barack Obama and Gun Control. Obama states that he respects citizens’ 2nd Amendment Rights, but at the same time he says that local gun bans are ok. He publicly supports the Washington D.C. handgun ban based on this rationale. This is very interesting considering that the D.C. crime rate is one of the highest in the country, which shows that these laws do not bring down crime rates. D.C is actually one of 2 places that I know of that have proven that gun control laws do not work. The other is Australia.  There is a very direct correlation between the increase in Australia’s crime rate and their institution of very strict gun control laws.
Barack Obama also disputes a claim that he endorsed legislation to ban handguns while in the Illinois State Legislature, but this is a misleading statement. In 1996 while he was running for a seat, he filled out a questionnaire for a non-profit political organization and question 35 was the following.
35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.
He later tried to blame it on a staffer.  If that’s true, it’s worse than I thought. Even his own staffers can’t figure out his stance on issues.
Obama has shown a history of trying to restrict gun ownership. In 2000, he cosponsored a bill to limit the sale of guns to one gun per month. The measure failed. There is actually only one time that I know of that Obama broke from his traditional gun control stance. While in the state legislature he voted to allow retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons. I do agree with this stance and his logic that because of their job they are at a higher risk and might need to protect themselves from past offenders. However, a few weeks later it was revealed that at the time he was fighting with his GOP counterpart for the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police. This was probably the actual reason for this uncharacteristic vote.
The bottom line is that if your 2nd Amendment rights are a significant issue for you, you should not vote for Barack Obama as he has a history of trying to put restrictions on your gun ownership. According to ontheissues.org vote-match system, Obama’s voting record and statements place him in the category of opposing the absolute right to gun ownership.Â
One issue down.
